About Yars Rising
I went in expecting a nostalgia trap and got a lean, smart action-adventure instead. Yars Rising is a 2D exploration game where you play as Yar, a humanoid fighter piecing together her origins through interconnected environments, combat encounters, and light puzzle-solving. WayForward's pixel work is gorgeous, that alone makes it worth your time if you care about sprite animation. The catch: it's short, and the combat is serviceable but not the draw. You'll fight, explore, gain new abilities that unlock fresh paths (classic Metroidvania loop), and beat it in maybe 5-8 hours. That's fine if you're after a tightly paced, story-driven action game. Less so if you want mechanical depth or a sprawling world. It does its thing and gets out of your way.
