The most unpredictable sword fighter on the Smash Ultimate roster - if random spell menus and critical-hit dice rolls sound fun rather than infuriating, Hero is absolutely worth picking up.

I've spent enough time in Smash Ultimate to know that most DLC fighters land with a clear identity: here is your anime swordsman, here is your rushdown brawler. Hero from Dragon Quest breaks that pattern in the best and most chaotic way possible. He is a spell-casting swordsman with a resource system ripped straight from Dragon Quest, and he plays nothing like the rest of the roster. The centrepiece mechanic is the MP Gauge - a 100-point bar that drains every time Hero uses a special attack and refills slowly over time or by landing normal hits on opponents. Spells like Frizz, Frizzle, and Kafrizz scale up in power depending on how long you hold the button, rewarding patience but punishing greed if you burn through MP too quickly. Then there is the Command Selection menu, a pop-up list of four randomly drawn spells from a larger pool that includes heavy-hitters like Gigaslash, crowd-control tools like Snooze, and buffs like Oomph and Psyche Up. Reading that menu fast, picking the right spell for the moment, and not getting punished while the screen is open is genuinely its own skill. On top of all that, smash attacks have a one-in-eight chance of landing a critical hit, doubling damage with a satisfying Dragon Quest chime. The randomness is real and it is built in by design. That randomness is also exactly why Hero became one of the more controversial additions to Smash Ultimate's competitive scene. Some prominent players pushed hard for a ban on tournament grounds, arguing the command menu made match outcomes too luck-dependent. The debate eventually settled and Hero is legal across all major regions, but the controversy is worth knowing about if you are a competitive player rather than a casual one. For casual play and local multiplayer, the chaos feels more like a feature. Pulling Kaclang at the wrong moment is funny. Pulling Hatchet Man when an opponent is at 60 percent is not funny for them. Four alternate costumes represent Dragon Quest protagonists from entries III (Erdrick), IV (Solo), VIII (Eight), and XI (the Luminary, the default), each with matching sword and shield designs. The Yggdrasil's Altar stage comes with the pack alongside a solid selection of Dragon Quest music that plays regardless of which stage you fight on when using it. The pack also launched alongside version 4.0 of Ultimate, which added online Tournament Mode and other broader game updates. You do not need to be a Dragon Quest fan to enjoy Hero, but the fan service layered in rewards anyone who is. The honest caveat: Hero has a steeper learning curve than most Smash DLC fighters. Managing the MP bar, reading the command menu under pressure, and knowing which spells are worth burning resources on takes real practice. He also relies more on opponents being unfamiliar with his kit than some other characters. Once someone knows how to bait out your command menu open animation, you are exposed. High floor of fun, but a ceiling that takes deliberate work to reach. Alex, Scout Team

Best for Smash players who want a high-risk, spell-slinging wild card rather than another straightforward sword fighter.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
