Pokemon Sword (Nintendo Switch)

I've sunk plenty of hours into Pokemon Sword, and it's the most accessible entry point to the franchise in years. The Dynamax mechanic swaps chess-like strategy for spectacle, which works better than it sounds. Open areas let you tackle gyms out of order and catch Pokemon way above your level, so the story doesn't railroad you. The downside: the Pokedex is half the size of previous games, so if you're attached to specific creatures, you might hit a wall. It's not a revolution, but Sword nails the core loop of catching, training, and battling. The Wild Area is a genuine exploration playground, and the gym challenges feel personal in ways the older games didn't bother with. Framerate dips in busy areas are rough, and the narrative doesn't ask much of you, but neither gets in the way of a solid 40-60 hour campaign if you're the type to talk to every NPC.
