I spent my first hour with Shantae just watching her move. WayForward's pixel work here is meticulous, every frame of the hair-whip attack and belly-dance transformations radiates intention. The core loop is solid: whip enemies, unlock new forms (turtle, harpy, elephant), backtrack to find secrets that clicked the first time you passed through but only make sense now. The pacing is generous, never punishing, which suits the breezy Sequin Land setting. What doesn't quite land is the platforming challenge itself. Obstacles are forgiving by design, and the boss encounters, while charming, lack the teeth to push you mechanically. If you're hunting frame-perfect movement or demanding combat depth, look elsewhere. But if you value atmosphere, hand-crafted animation, and a game that knows a 6-hour adventure doesn't need to outstay its welcome, Shantae delivers exactly that.
