I spent about 15 hours with Mandatory Happiness expecting a straightforward adaptation of the anime. Instead, I got a choice-driven detective story where you're investigating crimes in a surveillance state that judges people by their psychological profiles. You play as two protagonists across separate routes, making decisions that reshape the plot rather than just lock you into predetermined outcomes. The writing respects player agency in ways most visual novels don't. The catch: it's a visual novel, so expect reading over gameplay. Pacing drags in places, and some character arcs feel underdeveloped compared to the anime's scope. If you're already invested in Psycho-Pass lore, this fills gaps. If you're new to the series, the relentless tone might feel like being lectured by a philosophy textbook for five hours.
