The best sci-fi visual novel ever written gets a full rebuild, but whether you need it depends entirely on how many times you've already made Okabe suffer.

I've spent time with both the original 2009 STEINS;GATE and its first remake, Elite, so walking into RE:BOOT felt less like a reunion and more like a deposition. The question isn't whether the story holds up - it absolutely does - it's whether a third pass at the same Akihabara streets earns its existence. The short answer is a conditional yes, weighted heavily by where you're starting from. For newcomers, this is close to the ideal on-ramp. Everything from scratch: all character art, all backgrounds, all event stills have been completely redrawn, the entire voice cast re-recorded in Japanese, and composer Takeshi Abo rebuilt the soundtrack from the ground up. The result is a clean, modern presentation for one of the most celebrated time-travel stories in the medium. The first half is slow - genuinely, patience-testing slow - but once the plot fully ignites somewhere around the midpoint, it locks in and doesn't let go. The tonal shift from goofy lab-nerd comedy to gut-punch sci-fi tragedy is handled as well here as it ever was, and that's saying a lot. The core interaction loop is the Phone Trigger system: you respond to or ignore messages and calls on Okabe's phone, and those choices branch you toward one of several character routes and multiple endings. It's not a deep mechanic - this isn't a puzzle game wearing a visual novel skin - but it does a better job than a plain dialogue menu of making you feel like you're actually living inside the story rather than steering it from outside. Some routes, specifically Suzuha's and Faris's, pay off well. Others feel clipped short before they find their footing. The entirely new Gamma Worldline content and Moeka's expanded route are the clearest arguments for veterans to return, adding story beats that are genuinely fresh rather than cosmetic reshuffling. The art direction is the most divisive element. RE:BOOT sits somewhere between the original's hand-drawn stills and Elite's anime-footage approach, using an animation tool called E-mote to give characters real-time micro-expressions and breathing. In motion, some players find it immersive; others find the animated models slightly uncanny in a way that pulls focus from the script. It's a legitimate split in the community, and worth keeping in mind if you're particularly attached to either previous visual style. One minor but real annoyance: when a dialogue line runs long, the text gets vertically compressed to fit the box, and that happens enough to notice. At roughly 30 to 50 hours across a full route playthrough, this is a substantial read. Impatient players will bounce off the slow setup hard. But anyone who can commit to the pacing will find that the story's payoff remains genuinely extraordinary, and the new content gives longtime fans just enough reason to make the round trip one more time. Essential for first-timers; veterans should weigh the Gamma Worldline content against familiarity with the story they already love.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
