Bring three friends or prepare to suffer: this top-down co-op shooter rewards tight squads with some of the most chaotic, laugh-out-loud friendly-fire moments in the genre.

I've put enough hours into cooperative shooters to know when one is genuinely designed around teamwork versus just stapling a co-op button onto a single-player frame. HELLDIVERS Dive Harder Edition is firmly the former, and it commits to that identity in ways that will either delight you or send you back to the menu in frustration within the first twenty minutes. The core loop is a top-down, twin-stick shooter built around four-player co-op missions against three distinct enemy factions: the armored Cyborgs, the hive-like Bugs, and the technologically advanced Illuminate. Each drop starts clean and escalates fast. You pick four Stratagems before each mission, calling them in mid-combat by entering directional button sequences under pressure - think orbital strikes, sentry turrets, exosuits, and the MGX-42 Machinegun, each with cooldowns you have to manage carefully. Getting that code right while bugs are swarming your ankles is the game's central tension, and it works. Fully enabling friendly fire across the board means a misplaced Hellbomb or a poorly-thrown stratagem beacon is as likely to vaporize your squadmate as the enemy - which is simultaneously the biggest source of chaos and the biggest source of laughter. The Proving Grounds mode adds replayable, modifier-heavy missions (think shotguns-only conditions or sudden orbital bombardment mid-objective) that give squads something to grind beyond the planetary campaign. Stratagems can also be upgraded through a research system, sharpening their cooldowns and damage output the deeper you push into the game. What works exceptionally well here is the loadout tension. Each player choosing four Stratagems means squad composition actually matters - someone needs to cover reinforcements, someone needs anti-tank, and someone is probably going to bring the wrong thing and blame lag. The difficulty curve runs from trivially easy soloable missions all the way up to HELLDIVE and three additional tiers added in post-launch updates, where a single misstep can cascade into a full squad wipe. That breadth means the game scales surprisingly well over time. The Dive Harder Edition bundles all previous expansion packs - Commando, Demolitionist, Vehicles, and more - so there is a genuine wealth of weapons and gear to experiment with from the start. The caveats are real though. Solo play is rough. The game tolerates it but never encourages it, and the higher difficulties tilt hard against lone operators. The bigger concern for new buyers in 2026 is active player population - this is a 2015 release, and while the community saw a significant spike of interest around the launch of Helldivers 2, the original's online matchmaking pool is small. If you do not have two or three friends ready to jump in with you, the odds of finding a smooth public lobby drop fast. The live galactic war, where all players collectively push fronts across planets in real time, is a clever systemic hook that loses much of its meaning when population is thin. For what it is on its own terms, this is a tight, clever co-op game that understood what made Starship Troopers compelling and built a shooter around it. The stratagem system has genuine depth, the tone is perfectly calibrated between satire and action, and a coordinated four-person squad run on high difficulty still holds up as a genuinely satisfying experience. The Dive Harder Edition is the right version to own - all the content, all the post-launch difficulty tiers, no piecing together DLC packs separately. Alex, Scout Team

Outstanding with a committed squad of three or four; a tough sell if you're going in without friends lined up.
