GamerScout Verdict
A Walking Dead-themed curiosity that fumbles its premise; only for hardcore Escapists fans willing to forgive dated mechanics.

About The Escapists: The Walking Dead Deluxe Edition
I'll be blunt: this is a novelty product that doesn't quite nail either half of its pitch. The Escapists' core loop, studying guard patterns, hoarding items, planning escape routes, translates awkwardly into a Walking Dead skin where you're scavenging supplies and fending off walkers instead. The grid-based movement and turn-based combat feel clunky by modern standards, and the novelty of playing Rick Grimes wears thin fast once you realize the game doesn't deepen its mechanics to match the IP's survival stakes. Metacritic's 66 rating is generous. There's a functional strategy game here if you squint, but the Deluxe Edition is banking entirely on Walking Dead fandom to carry it. If you loved the original Escapists' methodical planning and don't mind dated presentation, you might squeeze a few hours out of this. Otherwise, skip it, the license can't compensate for shallow design.
