ACA NEOGEO THE KING OF FIGHTERS '96 (Xbox One)
A faithful arcade port that lets you relive SNK's 1996 fighting game in its original form, complete with the clunky mechanics and wild character design that defined mid-90s KOF.
GamerScout Verdict
For SNK historians and arcade purists only; everyone else should start with a later KOF title.

About ACA NEOGEO THE KING OF FIGHTERS '96 (Xbox One)
I went in expecting a janky time capsule, and that's exactly what King of Fighters '96 delivers. This is the game that launched SNK's most iconic fighting franchise, and the Arcade Archives emulation nails the hardware authenticity - you get the original arcade board feel, full roster of 26 characters with their signature special moves, and that particular flavor of 90s sprite work that either clicks for you or doesn't. The tag-team system is here and works fine, though the inputs demand precision that modern players might find frustrating. It's not a "best in the series" title by any measure, and newcomers would be better served by a later entry that cleaned up the mechanics. But if you're chasing that specific moment in fighting game history, or you grew up mashing buttons in arcades in 1996, this port does the work. HAMSTER's emulation is solid, the online netplay lets you test yourself against actual opponents, and there's genuine charm in how raw and unpolished it feels compared to today's hyper-balanced fighters. Not essential, but honest.
