The arcade fighter that turned combo theory into a religion, packaged with rewind saves and online play but no rollback safety net.

Street Fighter III: Third Strike gets talked about as the connoisseur's arcade fighter, but KOF 2002 is the one that trades parry-based patience for pure offensive throughput. HAMSTER's ACA NEOGEO release preserves the original three-on-three team battles, the four-tier gauge system that lets you cash meter into MAX mode, MAX supers or a screen-clearing Hidden Super Special, and a roster deep enough that most players never settle on one team. The port itself is the standard HAMSTER package: original and MVS regional variants, adjustable difficulty, display filters, save states, and online leaderboards for the Caravan and Score Attack modes. What it does exceptionally well is preserve a game built for execution, and if you want to learn Iori's quick max cancels or K's rushdown loops, the training-adjacent save state trick is genuinely useful. Where it disappoints is everything around the fighting. Netplay is barebones and the AI difficulty spikes hard and cheaply in the later stages. This is an archive release, not a modern fighting game platform, and you should buy it as one. Alex, Scout Team

GamerScout Verdict

Worth it for combo-system devotees who want a faithful NEOGEO archive, not for anyone expecting modern netcode or training tools.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
