A action-RPG spinoff in Square Enix's Valkyrie series that trades JRPG depth for hack-and-slash combat set against Norse apocalypse mythology. Fast, but thin.

Valkyrie Elysium is a spinoff in Square Enix's long-running Valkyrie series, one that leans hard into real-time action combat while shedding most of the strategic, character-driven weight that made earlier entries like Valkyrie Profile cult favorites. You play as a Valkyrie created by a diminished Odin to stave off Ragnarok, which is a genuinely compelling setup on paper. Norse mythology as a backdrop for exploring fate, sacrifice, and what it means to be a divine instrument built for a single purpose - that is rich territory. Elysium uses maybe fifteen percent of it. The combat system is the game's strongest argument for your time. You chain light and heavy attacks, swap between elemental weapons called Sacred Arts, and summon Einherjar - the souls of fallen warriors - to trigger combo extensions and elemental reactions. When it clicks, fights feel fluid and punchy. Boss encounters, in particular, have enough visual spectacle to satisfy fans of the action-RPG genre. The problem is that enemy variety dries up faster than Odin's remaining strength, and by the midgame you will recognize every encounter template on sight. The build variety exists in theory, but the game rarely demands you engage with it deeply, which means the system never really opens up the way it promises to. On the narrative side, Elysium is where the disappointment runs deepest for anyone coming in as a series fan or an RPG player who wants their choices to matter. The Valkyrie herself is underwritten, reactive rather than active, and the supporting cast of Einherjar companions each get a slim redemption arc that resolves predictably. There is an attempt at emotional payoff in the final chapters, and a handful of story beats land with genuine weight, but too much of the middle runtime is padded with repetitive map traversal and filler skirmishes that exist purely to push the XP bar. The world design is muted - lots of grey ruins and ashen fields - which fits the apocalyptic tone but makes exploration feel like a chore rather than a reward. Who is this actually for? If you played Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth or Covenant of the Plume and want a direct successor in spirit, Elysium will likely disappoint you. If you are an action-RPG player who wants something shorter and less demanding than a FromSoftware title, with Norse mythology dressing and some satisfying elemental combo windows, there is a weekend's worth of entertainment here. The mixed Steam reception (sitting at 63 percent positive) reflects a game that is competent but unfocused, one that never fully commits to being either a deep narrative RPG or a tight action game. It sits in the middle and captures the advantages of neither. Valkyrie Elysium is not a broken game, just an underambitious one. The mythology deserved a script that took bigger swings. The combat system deserved enemies complex enough to test it. What shipped is a polished but cautious spinoff that will frustrate fans who remember what this series is capable of. Monika, Scout Team

A passable action-RPG weekend with some fun combo mechanics, but fans of the Valkyrie series will feel the narrative shortfall hard.
