Anamik Majumdar, who hand-built every piece of art, animation, and character design here solo, seems to understand that constraint is a feature. The Haunted Exmone Theatre is a top-down 2D horror experience that clocks in at roughly half an hour - and it earns that running time honestly rather than padding it. The setup is genuinely atmospheric for its scale. You step into Omar, a paranormal investigator summoned to a decaying theatre with a grim history: a 1974 entertainment venue that slowly accumulated tragedy through murder and suicide, and by 1980 had become a place where the dead apparently refused to leave. That backstory - sparse but specific - gives the location a texture that a lot of short horror games miss entirely. The spirit world sequences and poltergeist illusion moments feel like they were designed with care rather than dropped in as checkbox content. Mini-puzzles punctuate the exploration without overstaying their welcome, and the ghost encounters carry a genuine low-fi eeriness that fits the pixel aesthetic better than a higher-budget approach might. The honest caveats are real, though. This is a micro-game with virtually no community footprint - only three Steam reviews exist and no critic coverage of any kind. That silence makes it hard to know how stable the experience is across different setups, and Linux users in particular should check the developer's dependency notes before assuming it runs clean. The pixel graphics sit in a cartoony-meets-dark register rather than the detailed retro-horror style some players expect from the genre, so screenshot-check before you commit. The atmosphere leans heavily on its soundtrack (composed outside the solo dev's own work), and when that soundscape lands, the short runtime feels intentional and complete. When it doesn't quite gel, there isn't enough mechanical depth to carry you through. Where I'd place this: it belongs alongside the kind of solo-dev itch.io horror experiments that show real creative instinct before the craft fully catches up. The lore - a murdered actress in a wedding dress, her killer's ghost in the greenroom - is the kind of specific, sad detail that good horror is built from. Majumdar has continued releasing games in this same world and style, which suggests the vision is deliberate, not accidental.
