The Black Signal

The Black Signal wraps card-based combat in a sci-fi wrapper, but the real hook is how deliberately it toys with RPG tropes. You're building decks and fighting through a campaign, sure, but the game keeps peeling back layers to expose what it's actually doing, and what you're doing by playing it. It's the kind of self-aware storytelling that either clicks immediately or leaves you cold. Combat is straightforward card synergy: draw, play, win. The meta-narrative is where the teeth are. If you appreciate games that question their own mechanics (think Undertale's commentary on choice, or Spec Ops: The Line's interrogation of player agency), this scratches that itch. Fair warning: the social criticism can feel heavy-handed if you're just here for deck-building fun. For the right audience, though, this is exactly the kind of weird indie swing worth taking.
