I came into this one fully expecting a lightweight nostalgia cash-in, and the first hour almost confirmed it. Chunky NES-era pixel sprites, a farcical retelling of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, familiar River City faces wearing general costumes. Then I started actually building Guan Yu out, swapping move scrolls between sessions, stacking stat points, juggling enemy crowds with the Hot-Blooded Dance mechanic, and something clicked. This is a beat-em-up with more going on under the hood than its retro skin suggests. The combat core is the strongest argument for buying. Controls are responsive, the punch-kick loop has real feedback, and the move customisation lets you shape a fighting style rather than just mashing through crowds. You can juggle enemies, pick up and hurl weapons, trigger a time-slow special mode, or save your SP for a screen-clearing bombardment when things get overwhelming. Ten Tactics borrowed from the Three Kingdoms setting add another layer of situational tools, and purchasing move upgrades in towns works the same way it did in River City Ransom, which is still a good system. The China Heroes bonus mode, buried in the Extra menu in a way that feels almost apologetic, strips out the RPG layer entirely for a pure arcade brawl with online co-op for up to 4 players. That mode alone is worth the company of a friend or two. Here is where I have to be straight with you. The map navigation is a mess. Missions bounce you across a sprawling world map, exit doors do not clearly correspond to where they send you, and fast travel arrives late enough that you will have already ground through enough backtracking to notice. The platforming sections are actively bad, built into a game whose 2.5D depth perception was never designed to support them. Missed ledge jumps will happen constantly, and that slippery-controls criticism you see in reviews is real rather than hyperbole. Enemy AI is thin too, basically a swarm mode with one setting: walk toward you in a group. The leveling curve also scales kindly enough that you will probably outpace most fights on moderate difficulty after unlocking the dropkick, which dulls the tension somewhat. Story mode supports 2-player co-op, and playing it that way papers over most of the solo tedium. The six chapters covering events from the Yellow Turban Rebellion through to the Battle of Red Cliffs clock in around 9 to 10 hours on a straight run, more if you dig into side quests, which is where the series humor actually lands. There is also a legitimate multiple-difficulty structure, though the harder tiers are locked behind lower clears, which feels like an unnecessary friction point for players who want to start at a higher challenge. Performance issues when large enemy groups crowd the screen have been flagged across platform versions, so temper expectations there. The honest readout: this is not a game for someone whose last brawler was Streets of Rage 4. That game is sharper in every mechanical dimension. River City Saga: Three Kingdoms is for the player who specifically wants the Kunio-kun feel, the RPG-wrapped brawler format, and an excuse to play something dumb and fun with a friend online on a weeknight.
