One of the best hack-and-slash games ever made gets an Unreal Engine 5 overhaul, if you missed Ryu Hayabusa the first time, now is the time to fix that.

My first hour with NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black was a genuine recalibration. Coming off a diet of Souls-likes and action RPGs where every boss fight is a half-hour endurance exam, watching Ryu Hayabusa dismantle a room full of demons in thirty seconds felt almost transgressive. This is not a game that hedges or pads. It moves at a speed modern action design rarely permits, and the Unreal Engine 5 rebuild makes every frantic moment look genuinely spectacular. The core of the game is Ryu and his arsenal: the Dragon Sword, Kusari-gama, Dual Tonfas, shurikens, and more, each upgradable up to three tiers using Essence collected from fallen enemies. Upgrading a weapon doesn't just boost numbers; it opens new combo strings, so investing in one weapon has a real payoff in how that weapon actually plays. The Lasting Damage system, a red cap on your health bar that creeps up as you fight, keeps you from feeling invincible even when combat goes well. You can button-mash your way through the early stages, but the game will punish that habit hard by the midpoint. Learning enemy patterns, timing Ultimate Techniques, and managing space across chaotic multi-enemy encounters is where the real satisfaction lives. Three additional playable characters, Rachel, Ayane, and Momiji, each carry their own movesets and chapter-specific missions, offering a genuine change of pace even if their combo trees are shallower than Ryu's. There are real caveats worth naming. NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black is built closer to the Sigma 2 version than the original Xbox 360 release: fewer enemies on screen, those that remain survive longer, and the overall feel of encounter design shifts from relentless swarming chaos toward more focused duels. Purists who remember the original's overwhelming enemy density will notice the difference immediately. The camera, unchanged from 2008, is still the game's most frustrating element; it drifts poorly in tight corridors and forces you to fight the viewpoint as much as the enemies. A handful of boss encounters show their age regardless of how good they look in 4K, and the story is, charitably, a delivery device for set pieces rather than a narrative worth tracking. On the technical side, the Unreal Engine 5 presentation is hard to argue with. Lighting across the varied environments, from collapsing aircraft to cursed ancient temples, genuinely benefits from the rebuild. The game targets 60fps across all platforms and largely holds it, with PC giving headroom for higher refresh rates depending on hardware. Online co-op and ranking modes from previous versions are absent here, making this a strictly solo experience. The Hero Play Style mode, which provides auto-assist in tough moments, makes the game a reasonable entry point for newcomers who want the spectacle without committing to the full difficulty curve. If you want a story-driven action game with emotional weight and branching narrative, this is the wrong shelf. If you want one of the fastest, most satisfying combat systems in the genre, rebuilt so it looks like it was made in 2025, this lands exactly where it needs to. Alex, Scout Team
