Every swing commits you. Start a Greatsword charge or a Switch Axe combo and you are locked into the animation, and that one design choice rewires how you play: you stop mashing and start reading. Monsters telegraph, you learn the tells, and you carve out the two-second window where a heal or a big hit actually lands. Fourteen weapon types each have their own rhythm, and picking one matters, because mastery takes hours rather than minutes. The friction is real. Menus are a maze, and joining a friend's hunt takes more lobby steps than it should. Progression is a gear grind by design, so if you need story momentum to keep going, the mid-game will feel repetitive. But layered armor lets you look how you want while wearing what actually works, and the prep-hunt-carve-upgrade loop gets its hooks in once pattern reading clicks. The mixed review score reads like people bouncing off the learning curve more than a broken game. Push past the first ten hours.
