Your first hour with Assault Squad 2 will probably involve losing an entire squad because you did not realise direct control lets you aim a single AT rifle at a tank's side armour instead of trusting the AI to do it. That friction is the whole game. Once it clicks, the ammo counting, crew micromanagement and per-shell penetration model turn into the deepest WW2 RTS decision-making on PC, and the 91% Steam consensus across 46k reviews reflects players who pushed through, not the ones who bounced in twenty minutes. The Deluxe upgrade is an add-on to a copy you already own, and it is the usual mix: extra multiplayer and skirmish content, editor and Workshop access, plus soundtrack and cosmetic filler that you will open once. If you play co-op or LAN with a regular group, or you intend to touch the Workshop mod scene at all, it pays for itself. Solo campaign players who just want the single-player missions should stay on standard and spend the difference elsewhere.
