Digital Happiness, the Bandung studio behind the DreadOut series, collaborated with Risa Saraswati, the creator of the well-known paranormal YouTube channel Jurnal Risa, to build a horror visual novel out of real-life ghost stories, regional folklore, and the emotional bonds of a group of people who have spent years walking into haunted buildings together. That specificity of origin is what gives this game its quiet power. At its core this is a 2D visual novel with hand-drawn illustrations, full Indonesian voice acting performed by the real Jurnal Risa crew, light puzzle mini-games (think rotation puzzles and hidden-ghost hunts), and a collectible photo system where each snapshot you find peels back another layer of the mystery. The tone oscillates between intimate family drama and the kind of slow dread that creeps in at the edges of a room rather than jumping at your face. There are multiple endings, branching choices that carry weight, and an archive-style lore system fleshing out a cast of 18 distinct spirits. The soundtrack leans into ambience: sparse, spacious, the kind of score that makes silence feel inhabited. The honest caveats: players expecting a rich dialogue-choice system in the vein of classic interactive fiction may find the branching thinner than advertised. The game leans closer to a guided narrative experience than a true choose-your-own-adventure, and the save system, which offers only three slots with no clear distinction between auto and manual saves, is easy to fumble. Runtime sits under three hours on a first playthrough, which will feel too short for some and exactly right for others. If you treat it the way you would a beautifully illustrated graphic novel rather than a traditional game, the length stops being a complaint and becomes a statement of intent. What Digital Happiness pulls off that larger studios rarely bother with is texture. The visual distinction between the world of the living and the spirit realm is rendered with genuine craft, using coloured-pencil-style CG work for supernatural sequences that contrasts sharply against the grounded warmth of the human scenes. The real-world footage of the Jurnal Risa crew woven into the opening grounds you in something documentary-adjacent before the story tips into the uncanny. For players who have never encountered Indonesian ghost lore, the game serves as a genuinely affecting introduction to a supernatural tradition that deserves far more global attention than it gets.
