Cute animal kids, a giant tank, and a panic button that asks you to sacrifice a child to win. Fuga earns its 94% Steam rating by making every tactical decision feel genuinely costly.

My first few minutes with Fuga: Melodies of Steel were disarming in the worst possible way. The art is soft and Studio Ghibli-adjacent, the cast is a bunch of anthropomorphic kids with big eyes and bigger feelings, and then the tutorial forces you to load one of them into the Soul Cannon. That mechanic, a one-shot kill that destroys anything on the battlefield in exchange for permanently sacrificing a crew member, is not a late-game emergency option. It is introduced almost immediately, and the game never lets you forget it exists. The setup is a steampunk alternate history pulled loosely from occupied France in the 1940s. A group of animal-people children from the village of Petit Mona discover the Taranis, an ancient giant tank buried in a cave, and use it to fight across the war-torn region of Gasco looking for their families. The story spans 12 chapters and toggles between turn-based combat, intermission phases, and brief village stops. There is no open world, no level grinding, and almost no exploration outside the tank itself. What there is: a tight loop that refuses to let up. The tank moves across a branching route map where safer paths mean fewer rewards and harder paths mean more scrap for upgrades but also more punishment if your positioning falls apart. Battles run on a timeline system showing turn order for all twelve crew members and enemies. You field six kids at a time, with three active at any moment operating the tank's three weapon types: machine gun, grenade launcher, and cannon. The other three in reserve build a relationship gauge with whoever is on the front line, and filling it unlocks powerful link attacks tied to character pairings. Damage types matter against specific enemy variants, and well-timed attacks can delay enemy turns, which gives the system more depth than it looks like on the surface. What starts as straightforward quickly becomes a resource puzzle: Action Points earned between battles fund intermission activities like upgrading the workshop, cooking meals, farming, or simply tending to crew relationships. Spending those points carelessly is how you arrive at a boss fight underprepared and reach for the Soul Cannon. The Deluxe Edition adds a Soul Cannon Dummy, an item replenished each boss fight that can substitute for a real child when you fire it. It softens the hardest edge of the game, which is worth knowing if the permadeath-adjacent tension sounds more exhausting than exciting. The included 80-page digital art book and 15-track digital soundtrack round out the package. The soundtrack in particular earns its place, pulling closer to ambient RPG scoring than anything bombastic, and it lands well against the game's tone. The criticisms worth flagging: the game is deliberately linear, and players expecting exploration or the kind of RPG systems that sprawl outward will find it sparse. The story can tip into melodrama, and some routes feel repetitive by the mid-game before new mechanical elements arrive to freshen things up. But the core holds. CyberConnect2 built something that does one thing exceptionally well: it makes you care enough about these characters that every decision in battle carries weight. That is harder to pull off than it sounds, and Fuga does it without padding the runtime or losing the thread. If turn-based tactics with emotional stakes sound appealing, this one earns the hours. Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
