Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles Digital Deluxe Edition

I've played enough CyberConnect2 anime fighters to know exactly what template they're working from, and The Hinokami Chronicles is unmistakably cut from the same cloth as the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series. That's not a death sentence - it means the fundamentals are solid - but it also means the ceiling is visible from the title screen.

The combat is the game's best argument for itself. Each character brings their own Breathing Style or Blood Demon Art into arena battles, and while the underlying system - light combos, special attacks, a combo limit meter, dodge, block, and a cinematic ultimate - is not complicated, the moment-to-moment fights feel punchy and visually spectacular. CyberConnect2's art direction is genuinely excellent here: the cel-shaded visuals match the anime so closely that cutscenes and gameplay blur together in a satisfying way. The original Japanese and English voice casts are both present, which matters to fans who are particular about that sort of thing. The roster grew post-launch with characters like Akaza and Rui added as free updates, and an additional paid character pack brought fighters from the Entertainment District arc, landing the total at 31 playable characters. That said, the initial roster leaned heavily human-side, and the DLC-gated additions will frustrate players who want the full cast out of the box.

The story mode covers the first season through the Mugen Train arc, retelling Tanjiro's journey from mountain village tragedy to that wrenching train climax. Between fights, you guide Tanjiro through semi-open environments, pick up collectibles, and chat with NPCs. This exploration layer is where the seams show: the maps feel dated and thin, quests are basic fetch-and-talk jobs, and the pacing slows to a crawl in the wrong moments. It functions as a decent vehicle for reliving story beats, but as a standalone adventure mode it doesn't hold up to scrutiny. There's also a known annoyance in versus combat - getting knocked down triggers a long recovery animation that leaves both players standing around awkwardly, killing momentum.
