A 4X real-time strategy set on Arrakis where controlling spice production is the actual win condition, not just a resource side quest.

Dune: Spice Wars is a real-time 4X from Shiro Games, the studio behind Northgard, and it shows. The DNA is familiar: expand across a hex-based map, manage a small roster of units, and slowly strangle rivals through economic and military pressure. What makes it distinct is that the entire map revolves around spice. Harvesting it, protecting your harvesters from sandworms, selling it on the market, and using it to curry favor with CHOAM and the Landsraad council shapes almost every decision you make from minute ten onward. The political layer, where you spend influence to pass resolutions and block opponents from doing the same, adds a second chess match running in parallel to the ground war. Four playable factions at launch, expanded to six with additional content, each play noticeably differently. The Atreides lean into council politics and intelligence networks. The Harkonnen brute-force with military units and oppression mechanics. The Fremen treat the desert as an ally, ignoring sandworm penalties and raiding from the deep sands. The Smugglers play a high-risk economic game, trading illegally and bribing their way through situations other factions would have to fight. If you are the kind of player who reads a faction sheet before picking, you will find real decision space here. Build orders matter, tech tree paths diverge meaningfully, and the spice market is genuinely reactive to how aggressively everyone is harvesting. The AI is competent on standard difficulty, occasionally surprising on hard, but it does not adapt to player strategies the way you might hope from a 2023 release. It manages its council votes reasonably well but tends to over-commit military units in ways a human would not. Multiplayer fixes this entirely, and the game's council voting system becomes much more tense when real people are bluffing their vote intentions. The map generator keeps sessions feeling fresh, though the mid-game can drag when two factions reach a defensive equilibrium and neither has the spice income to break it. Late game snowball is real: pull ahead in spice yield and you will generally win unless the Landsraad gangs up on you, which does happen. For newcomers to 4X games, the scope here is smaller than a Civilization or Humankind title, and that is a feature. Sessions run three to five hours rather than twenty. The tutorial covers the basics adequately, and the faction complexity ramps up gradually enough that a first Atreides run is not overwhelming. Returning 4X players may find the combat system shallow, as unit variety is limited and battles resolve quickly without much tactical micromanagement. The mod ecosystem on Steam is growing but not yet a major selling point. This is a game you play for the systems interaction, the spice economy tension, and the Dune license done with actual respect for the source material, not a modding sandbox. At its core, Dune: Spice Wars rewards patience and political awareness over raw aggression. If you have bounced off previous Shiro Games titles for being too casual, this one has more teeth. If you are coming in fresh to 4X strategy, the shorter session length and focused map scale make it a reasonable starting point. The mixed Steam rating stems largely from a rocky early access period rather than the final release state, which is substantially more polished. Diego, Scout Team

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
