Dota 2 is free-to-play — free to download and play, with optional paid editions and DLC compared on this page. Developed by Valve. Published by Valve. Released on 7/9/2013. Available on PC, Mac, Linux. Genres: Action, Strategy, Free To Play. Metacritic score: 90/100.

Free to play, impossible to master, and somehow still the most-played game on Steam after 12 years. Worth your time only if you can survive the first 50 hours.

I have color-coded spreadsheets for Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis, so when I say Dota 2 is the most demanding strategic system I have ever put hours into, I mean that as a genuine data point, not hyperbole. The 5v5 structure looks deceptively simple on paper: two teams, three lanes, one Ancient to destroy. What the tutorial cannot fully communicate is that every single one of those 127 heroes operates on its own internal logic, and the item shop sitting behind a three-tier vendor system adds another layer of decision-making on top of micro, macro, and draft theory. The current roster runs from straightforward safelane carries like Wraith King, whose Reincarnation ultimate literally lets you die and respawn, all the way up to Invoker and Meepo, heroes that require the kind of mechanical precision you would normally associate with a flight simulator. Here is the case I will make for the newcomer: start with one hero and commit to it for 20 to 30 matches. Axe in the offlane is a legitimate onboarding tool because his entire game plan is one sentence long. Get into melee range, press Blink Dagger, spin. The muscle memory you build there, precise initiation, reading enemy positioning, knowing when your team is ready to follow up, transfers directly to every other hero you will ever play. Support roles are viable entry points too, but do not be fooled into thinking position 5 is a forggiving slot. Supports carry genuine impact in late-game teamfights in the current meta, so even an easy support like Crystal Maiden demands you understand vision, courier management, and ability timing before you will feel useful. The meta itself is in constant, deliberate motion. Patch 7.38, the Wandering Waters update, expanded the map and reshuffled objectives. The subsequent Spring Forward patch in 7.39 reworked most of the hero roster. Axe, Batrider, Shadow Shaman, Nature's Prophet, and Earthshaker emerged as standout picks across the 2025 competitive year, partly because item interactions like Blademail paired with the Chipped Vest neutral artifact created clear snowball windows that aggressive players could exploit. That level of systemic depth is exactly what keeps this game alive over a decade in. Each major patch is effectively a new game layered on the same engine. The complaints are real and worth naming. Matchmaking can be miserable, queue times vary by region, and the behavior score system is divisive enough that a meaningful chunk of the player base finds it more punishing than fair. The community has a reputation it has not entirely outgrown. None of that changes the competitive ceiling, which remains the highest in the MOBA genre by a considerable margin. Cosmetics are purely visual and all 127 heroes are available to every player from the moment they install the client, which is a better free-to-play model than most live-service games bother with. A Dota Plus subscription exists and adds stat tracking and hero progression perks, but it does not touch gameplay balance. For strategy players who measure game value in decision density per minute, the calculus is straightforward. Nothing else on PC puts this much computable information on the screen and asks you to act on it in real time, at pace, with four teammates depending on the read you make at the 25-minute mark. It is brutal to learn, honest about that brutality, and genuinely rewarding once the numbers start clicking. Diego, Scout Team
