Slash monsters with your date, then text them after the dungeon run. Boyfriend Dungeon's premise is absurd on paper and weirdly compelling in practice, though its brevity and thin combat will frustrate anyone chasing depth.

I came into Boyfriend Dungeon ready to treat it as a curiosity, the kind of game you file under "interesting experiment" and move on from. What I did not expect was to spend an evening legitimately invested in a K-pop star's crisis of identity and a vampire's complicated sense of self-worth. The hook is simple: weapons are people, people can be dated, dating people makes them more powerful weapons. The loop that supports that hook, however, is just shallow enough to keep the concept from fully landing. On the mechanical side, the dungeon runs, called "dunjs" in the game's endearingly self-aware slang, give you light attacks, heavy attacks, a dodge roll, and a special ability tied to whichever partner you have equipped. Each weapon carries a distinctly different combat style, and the skill upgrades for each are cleverly aligned to personality: one character good at verbal wordplay has a parrying ability, while another, a party animal, inflicts a bleeding effect on enemies. Swapping weapons between floors to build up Love Rank across your full roster adds a light resource-management layer that is genuinely satisfying to optimize. There are two separate experience tracks: one for the player character, boosting health and carry capacity for items, and one for each weapon-date, which unlocks new abilities and date options as affection climbs. That is about as deep as the systems get. The game has only two dungeons total, which feels sparse given how central dunj-crawling is to the story. The action is simple and repetitive, and dying carries no real penalty: you leave the dunj and wake up back in your apartment. Anyone expecting Hades-caliber action will be disappointed; the game does not reach that level of combat depth. Where the game earns its score is in the writing and character work. The dates are where the game truly excels, with each weapon carrying a compelling personal story, from Isaac's tense relationship with his father to Seven the K-pop star's struggle with depression and fame. All characters have distinct texting styles, which matters because relationship-building through texts is a core mechanic throughout. A successful date improves that weapon's combat abilities, and reaching maximum affection with at least one partner before the final battle determines which ending scenes you access, so relationship investment is both narrative and mechanical. The crafting system, where you gather dunj materials to make gifts, clothing, and magic zines that add special moves, gives grinders a small but real reason to replay floors. It is not a mod ecosystem, but it is something. There is a content note worth flagging clearly. The game's antagonist is an emotionally manipulative stalker, and dealing with this character is unavoidable over the course of the story. Kitfox acknowledged at launch that their original content warning inadequately described the stalking and emotional manipulation in the story, and updated the wording shortly after release. The current content warning is specific. Know what you are signing up for before you start. The stalker arc is intentionally uncomfortable, functions as the plot's central conflict, and resolves with some catharsis, but it will not be for everyone. On the practical side: a controller is strongly recommended over keyboard and mouse, as combat with a controller becomes a delight versus a frustration simulator on keys alone. There is a Goddess Shield option in settings that halves all incoming damage, which helps players less comfortable with action-game timing. Total runtime sits around five to eight hours, which is light for anything billing itself as an RPG. The audience here is someone who genuinely likes the visual novel side of things and wants action segments to pace the reading, not someone hunting for a robust dungeon crawler to sink a hundred hours into. Approached with the right expectations, it delivers a focused, well-written, inclusive story with a soundtrack that earns its keep. Approached as a strategy sim with romance wrapping, you will be done before you find your build. Diego, Scout Team
