Ancient Battle: Hannibal
A crisp Punic Wars hex wargame that buries its rules in an external manual. Survive that first confusing hour and you get a clean, low-overhead campaign.
GamerScout Verdict
A solid on-ramp to hex wargaming if you'll read the manual first; skip it if you want AI that fights back.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.
We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.

About Ancient Battle: Hannibal
The first hour is where most people bounce off this one, and it is entirely the tutorial's fault. Nothing on screen tells you why your veteran Hastati suddenly evaporate against cavalry on open ground, because the actual combat math lives in a manual the game expects you to go hunting for. Once you find it and read the zones of control and terrain modifier rules, the hex grid stops feeling arbitrary. Units carry over between scenarios, so the campaign is really one long resource-management problem: do you push a battered elephant unit for one more objective hex, or pull it back and eat the slower victory? That persistence is the whole game, and it is enough. This is a low-complexity wargame by design, no supply lines or logistics layers, so a Punic Wars scenario resolves in twenty or thirty minutes rather than a weekend. The AI is competent at holding chokepoints and bad at punishing a flank, which means the difficulty comes from your own attrition rather than clever opposition. Single-player only, no mod support, and the presentation is functional at best. For a first turn-based wargame, though, the entry cost in patience is low.
