About Civil War: 1865
I went in expecting a focused tactical experience around Lee's final months and the Union's closing campaign. Civil War: 1865 delivers the historical setup but struggles with execution. The turn-based combat system works in theory, with unit positioning and supply lines mattering, but the AI rarely punishes poor decisions and often makes baffling ones itself. Unit variety is thin, and the interface feels dated even by 2017 standards. What saves it from total dismissal is that the scenarios themselves are historically grounded enough to hold interest if you're teaching yourself the actual campaign. This isn't a deep strategy sim like Total War or Paradox titles. It's more of a competent but forgettable board-game adaptation. The mixed Steam reviews (52% positive) reflect a game that works but doesn't excel. Unless you're specifically hunting 1865 Civil War scenarios or want a low-stakes portable tactics experience, stronger alternatives exist at this price point.
