Xenon Valkyrie+

Xenon Valkyrie+ is a side-scrolling roguelike that doesn't waste time on story fluff. You pick a class, descend into a randomly-assembled space facility, and fight your way through aliens and traps until something kills you. Then you do it again. The action is snappy, combat feels weighty, and the platforming sections force you to stay sharp instead of just button-mashing. What keeps it from being essential is scope. The run variety is solid but not staggering, and after a few successful playthroughs the novelty flattens. It's the kind of game that's perfect for a weekend or two of grinding runs, but doesn't have the hook to keep you coming back months later. If you like roguelikes that respect your time and don't over-explain themselves, this scratches that itch cleanly.
