Published by KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD., CE-Asia(Asia). Released on 3/3/2023. Available on Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Xbox, PC. Genres: Action, Adventure, RPG. Metacritic score: 79/100.

Parry or die: Team Ninja's Three Kingdoms action-RPG is a lean, fast Sekiro-adjacent brawler that lands its combat highs harder than almost anything in its class, then fumbles the depth its genre siblings perfected.

I went in expecting Nioh with a new coat of paint and came out with something harder to categorize. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty strips away a lot of what made the Nioh games sprawling loot-heavy epics and replaces that complexity with a single, high-conviction bet: the Spirit Gauge and a deflect system so central to the combat loop that the game practically punishes you for dodging. Attacking and landing successful deflections push your gauge positive, unlocking powerful Spirit Attacks. Blocking or casting Wizardry Spells drain it. Enemies carry the same gauge, and cracking theirs open is how most serious fights end. It is a tight, committed design choice, and when it clicks, the rhythm feels genuinely electric. The Five Virtues system ties your character build to five elemental affinities, each unlocking its own school of Wizardry Spells with type strengths and weaknesses. A pure spellcaster is not on the table since you must always keep melee at the center of your kit, which limits build variety compared to Nioh 2 but keeps the combat identity focused and readable. Martial Arts abilities layer on top, and the interaction between spells, deflects, and Spirit Attacks does reward experimentation, even if the ceiling is lower than genre veterans might hope. The Morale Ranking system, which governs how much damage you deal and take relative to enemies in each zone, encourages planting Battle Flags and clearing side encounters rather than rushing objectives, which is a smart structural nudge against pure speed-running. Here is where the honest accounting gets uncomfortable. The NPC companion system, present for most missions, softens the difficulty curve to the point where some boss fights feel deflated before they start. Then the game occasionally strips companions away entirely and the difficulty spikes hard, creating uneven pacing that feels like a design miscommunication rather than intentional tension. Enemy variety thins noticeably past the early missions, and the level structure is largely linear, with limited branching. The story sets itself in a dark fantasy version of the Later Han Dynasty, remixing historical Three Kingdoms figures like Cao Cao and Lu Bu against a demon infestation backdrop. The worldbuilding has a genuine inner logic and the character portrayals are more nuanced than the usual Dynasty Warriors shorthand, but the narrative delivery is clunky and rarely the reason you push forward. The real reason is that the next boss fight might be the one that makes the whole system sing. On PC, the launch was rough, with frame rate issues and poor mouse-and-keyboard support driving a wave of negative Steam reviews that still drag the score toward Mixed territory. Patches have addressed many of the technical problems, and the current state is considerably more stable, but the Steam review average carries that launch-era damage. If you are playing on Xbox, the picture is cleaner. The runtime sits around twenty-plus hours for the main campaign, with optional missions and a New Game Plus structure extending that for completionists, though the repetition does set in before the credits roll. Wo Long is the game you recommend to someone who finished Sekiro and wants more of that parry-forward intensity in a new setting, not to someone who wants the build depth of Nioh 2 or the open-world narrative weight of Elden Ring. It is confident in its lane, frustrating in its inconsistencies, and genuinely satisfying in the moments it stops holding back. Monika, Scout Team

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
