About Valiant Hearts: The Great War
Valiant Hearts strips away the glorification most war games cling to and replaces it with something quieter: four interconnected stories of ordinary people caught in the machinery of the Great War. You're solving environmental puzzles, collecting letters and mementos, and moving between battlefields and home fronts to untangle how these characters' lives intersect. The art style is gorgeous and deliberately lighthearted despite the subject matter, which sounds weird until you play it and realize that tonal contrast is exactly the point. If you go in expecting action or strategy, you'll bounce off fast. This is a walking simulator with logic puzzles bolted on, and the puzzles themselves are rarely difficult. What it does offer is a focused narrative that respects your intelligence and avoids the "war is hell" clichés that turn most period dramas into grinding spectacles. It's short, hits hard in specific moments, and doesn't overstay its welcome.
