A hand-fired German tank engine for people who consider shovel timing a puzzle. Everyone else will bounce off it in twenty minutes.

Twelve minutes into a short freight run, my boiler pressure dropped below the line and the injector started fighting me, and I realised I had been shovelling on instinct instead of on a rhythm. That is the whole loop here. This 2-8-2 tank engine from Dovetail arrived in 2015 as an add-on for Train Simulator, and its appeal is entirely in the manual fire management: coal placement, damper and blower settings, water level, and the constant balancing act between having enough steam for the next grade and not wasting it sitting in a loop waiting for a signal. The honest limitation is scope. You get one locomotive, a handful of scenarios, and whatever the Workshop community has built, which for a German branch-line freight machine is not a deep well. Steam reviews sit mixed at around 60 percent positive across a tiny sample, and the complaints are the usual add-on ones: thin scenario count, and cab detail that varies depending on which route you drop it onto. There is no tutorial that teaches hand firing properly, so newcomers should expect to read a forum thread before their first successful run. If you already own the routes and enjoy the fireman's job more than the driver's, this is a good few evenings. If you want scenery and schedules, look elsewhere in the catalogue. Diego, Scout Team

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
