I went in expecting a souped-up horde shooter with a Rainbow Six skin slapped on top. What I got was something far more restrained, and honestly more interesting on a mechanical level, even if it never quite reaches its own potential. Extraction is a three-player PvE tactical shooter built around Incursions, chunked into three procedurally-generated zones per run, each with a randomised objective and a 15-minute clock ticking overhead. You pick from a roster of 18 operators, each with distinct gadgets and abilities, move slowly through alien-infested maps, and complete objectives that range from capturing elite Archaean enemies to gathering samples from nests. The moment-to-moment feel is closer to XCOM's careful calculation than Left 4 Dead's frantic sprinting. That is both its biggest strength and its most divisive trait. The shooting is genuinely satisfying. Firearms feel weighty and distinct, suppressors matter, and the choice of operator shapes how you approach each room. Ela's Grzmot Mines for crowd control, Thermite for wall-breaching plays, Hibana for precision flanks. The operator-injury system adds a layer of resource management that most co-op shooters skip: damage carries over between Incursions, forcing you to rotate operators and let wounded ones heal in real time. If a squadmate goes down and you can't extract them, they go MIA and must be rescued in a future run. It creates genuine stakes without ever feeling cheap, provided you have a coordinated team. That word, coordinated, is where things get conditional. Playing with two friends who communicate is a very different game from queuing solo or with randoms. Solo runs are tense in a good way, but certain mechanics, like knocking environmental hazards off a blinded teammate, become functionally impossible alone. The Maelstrom Protocol offers a weekly evolving challenge for players who've cleared the main content, and horde-adjacent crisis events are available for groups chasing harder difficulty and unique loot. The endgame exists, in other words, but the path to it is shorter than most will expect. Most reviewers and community voices agree you can see the full objective variety within a handful of hours, and the content ceiling becomes visible fast. The harder truth in 2026 is that active player counts have collapsed since launch. Finding a random squad on Xbox is not guaranteed. The Buddy Pass included in this Deluxe Edition, which lets two friends trial the game for free, was a smart launch feature but it's a relic of a healthier moment. The Obscura, Noxious Touch, and React Strike cosmetic packs round out the Deluxe Edition but add no gameplay weight. If you are buying this expecting a live game buzzing with activity, the current reality will disappoint. If you are buying this because two friends are already committed and you want a methodical co-op shooter that rewards stealth and communication over reflexes, there is a genuinely compelling 10-to-20-hour experience here that most of the genre does not offer.
