The Escapists - Escape Team
Plan it wrong and a guard confiscates your wire cutters at roll call. Plan it right and you feel like a genius. The Escapists rewards the methodical and punishes the impatient in equal measure.
GamerScout Verdict
Best for methodical players who enjoy self-directed puzzle solving and won't mind a cold-start tutorial that tells you almost nothing.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

About The Escapists - Escape Team
I spent more time than I care to admit watching a prison clock tick down to the next roll call, frantically stuffing contraband behind a poster before a guard wandered into my cell. That tension is the engine of The Escapists, and when it works, there is nothing quite like it in the indie strategy space. You are an inmate working through a series of increasingly locked-down prisons, and your job is to crack each one open using whatever combination of craft items, bribed allies, and brute patience you can manage. The systems here are tighter than they first look. Each prison runs on a strict timed schedule: roll calls, meals, exercise periods, free time, lights out. Inside those windows you are building stats at the gym to raise your strength, picking up prison jobs like laundry or kitchen duty to earn cash, and running favors for fellow inmates that range from delivering contraband to starting fights on demand. The cash feeds a small inmate economy where you buy crafting components, and the components build the tools that make escape physically possible. A wire cutter, a flimsy key mould, a file, a shovel, a guard uniform. Multiple exit routes exist in every map, including tunneling beneath the perimeter wall, cutting through fences, disguising yourself as a guard, or inciting a riot as cover. The decision of which route to pursue is genuinely strategic and the answer changes based on which prison you are in. Here is the honest part: the tutorial is close to useless. It implies you could walk out in twenty minutes, which is fiction. The crafting recipe system offers almost no in-game guidance, and new players will spend their first few sessions failing not because the game is too hard but because key information is withheld. The Steam Workshop partially solves this through community-built prison maps and guides, but the base onboarding is a real weakness. Once you crack the knowledge barrier, though, the depth becomes clear. Guards track your "heat" level, contraband checks happen unpredictably, and getting caught mid-escape strips your progress in punishing ways. The AI is not sophisticated by any modern standard, but it is consistent and readable enough to plan around, which is what matters for this genre. Who should play it? Anyone who enjoys systems-within-systems puzzle solving and does not mind that the early hours are a self-directed discovery process. The pixel art aesthetic is charming and the per-prison soundtrack keeps sessions from feeling mechanical. The Steam Workshop extends replayability well beyond the base prison roster, and the leaderboard integration gives speedrunners a reason to keep optimising escape routes. People expecting action or narrative will bounce off hard. The Metacritic score of 71 reflects the polarised critic response: reviewers who wanted momentum found the repetitive daily loop exhausting, while the Steam audience at 90% positive tells you the players who self-selected into it found exactly what they were after. The gap between those two numbers is the whole story.
