About Tempest - Treasure Lands (DLC)
Tempest is a pirate-flavored open-world action RPG where you command a ship across three sprawling ocean maps packed with colonies, forts, and enemy vessels begging to be boarded. The base game leans into the fantasy of being a free-roaming sea dog: you trade goods, take on quests, get into naval skirmishes, and optionally drag friends along for co-op mayhem. Treasure Lands is a DLC expansion that layers additional content onto that foundation, introducing new zones and presumably fresh quest lines, loot, and enemies - though the specifics of what exactly lands in this pack versus the base game are not always crisply communicated by the developer. As an RPG, Tempest sits closer to the action end of the spectrum than the systems-heavy end. Don't expect Pillars of Eternity-style branching dialogue or agonizing moral choices. What you get instead is the loop of ship upgrades, crew management, and the satisfying crunch of boarding a heavily armed galleon. The open-world structure means you can largely chart your own course, and the three-world scale gives early hours a genuine sense of scope. Whether that scope holds up mechanically past the midpoint is a fair question - the quest design reportedly skews toward fetch-and-fight patterns more than anything narratively memorable. The co-op component is a genuine differentiator. Pirate games live or die by whether they feel lonesome, and being able to rope in friends for fleet-style play adds texture to what would otherwise be a fairly thin solo experience. Controller support and family sharing make it accessible across setups, which is a practical plus for couch sessions or shared libraries. The honest caveat here: with no Metacritic score and no Steam review data to reference, it is genuinely hard to know how polished this DLC is or whether HeroCraft addressed the pacing criticisms that followed the base game. Treasure Lands releasing in 2017 puts it in an era where the studio was still iterating. If the base game's loop already clicked for you, the added content is a reasonable extension. If you bounced off the repetitive quest structure of the main game, this pack is unlikely to fix that underlying issue - it adds more map, not more depth. For RPG players who need rich narrative payoff and meaningful choices, Tempest in any form is not your port of call. For players who want a breezy, visually fleet pirate sandbox with a friend on voice chat and low expectations for storytelling, Treasure Lands fills a specific niche with reasonable competence.
