A five-to-six-hour murder mystery where the prime suspect is a painting, and somehow that setup earns every minute of your attention.

My first instinct when I sat down with Tangle Tower was that it felt like something hand-stitched rather than assembled. SFB Games is a small studio, and you sense the care at every click: the painted-style backgrounds, the fluid character animations, the way each room carries its own quiet musical motif that shifts the moment a new suspicion surfaces. This is the third entry in the Detective Grimoire series, but you do not need a single hour of prior knowledge to step inside. The story is fully self-contained. The premise does the heavy lifting immediately. Freya Fellow is dead. The only suspect with any physical proximity to the body is a painting she was working on, and a knife drips from the canvas. Detectives Grimoire and Sally arrive on a small island where Tangle Tower, two joined towers sharing a grand mansion, takes up almost everything. Eight suspects live here: Felix Fellow the dreamer patriarch, his microbiologist daughter Fifi, the enormous gardener Fitz, astronomer Percival Pointer, pianist Poppy, ornithologist Penny, and a few more souls with reasons to keep quiet. The cast is the game's backbone. Each character has their own leitmotif, their own animated mannerisms, and dialogue so funny it made reviewers laugh out loud mid-interrogation. Grimoire's playful observations and Sally's dry sarcasm form a double act that carries you from room to room without the pacing ever feeling like dead weight. Mechanically, Tangle Tower is a point-and-click investigation. You click everything in a scene, gathering clues and triggering short exchanges. Once you have enough material on a character, a Suspicion unlocks: a structured interrogation puzzle where you connect clues into an accusation and press the suspect to crack open a secret they have been sitting on. The locked-container puzzles scattered through each room are the real brain-work. No two share a solution method. One has you rotating a mechanical solar system until shadows cast by the sun and moon align with marks on a floor plate. Another uses a birdhouse to arrange parent birds whose combined colours and expressions produce the correct offspring below. A cracked cassette tape in a gramophone becomes a clue with layers. The puzzle design respects both younger players who want a story and adults who want a moment of genuine friction. A loose hint system is there if you need it, which smooths the frustration without removing the satisfaction. The honest caveats are worth naming. The game runs five to six hours depending on how thoroughly you search each room, and thorough searching is the right way to play it. Replay value is low once the mystery is solved. And the ending, which several reviewers noted independently, feels compressed and slightly at odds with the patient, layered build-up that precedes it. Not all the clues you chase turn out to be load-bearing. Some players will find that deflating. I think the better lens is this: Tangle Tower rewards you for treating the experience as a place you inhabit rather than a puzzle you extract a solution from. The soundtrack, the character relationships, the creeping sense that the mansion holds something deeper than a single murder. These are the reasons the Steam community has held a 95% positive rating across nearly three thousand reviews. If you love Ace Attorney or Professor Layton but wish either had warmer characters and a shorter commitment, Tangle Tower is the game you have been looking for. It knows exactly when to end, even if the final hour rushes toward that ending faster than it should. That is a specific, honest flaw in an otherwise beautifully crafted small world. Kai, Scout Team

Worth it for fans of Ace Attorney-style deduction who want a shorter, warmer, more hand-crafted mystery to spend a rainy afternoon with.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
