Walking a city that a level designer actually laid out, with a serpent cult's theology baked into the architecture, is the version of Starfield I always wanted. The catch is that it is short, the quest design is thinner than the setting deserves, and player reception skewed sour on release. Anyone hoping for a Shivering Isles or a Blood and Wine sized swerve did not get one. If you are the kind of RPG player who buys expansions for lore and worldbuilding rather than hour counts, it is worth having bundled. If you measure DLC in content-per-hour, it is not the thing that rescues this package. As context on the base game, the 57 percent Mixed rating across roughly 175,000 Steam reviews is not a mob overreacting. Starfield has real RPG bones. The background and trait system gives you dialogue hooks that actually fire, the faction lines (Ryujin's corporate espionage, the Crimson Fleet infiltration, the Freestar Rangers) are the strongest writing Bethesda has shipped in years, and New Game Plus is a legitimately clever structural idea rather than a difficulty reset. The skill and ship building systems also open up nicely past the twenty hour mark. What drags is everything between those highlights: fast travel stitched together with loading screens, procedurally generated outposts you have already cleared three times, and Constellation companions who moralize at you for taking any interesting choice. My hour 40 problem was not build variety. It was that the game kept handing me busywork between the parts that mattered. My read: if Shattered Space is on your list regardless, taking it bundled here is the tidier purchase and the cosmetics are a shrug of a bonus. If you are new to Starfield, buy standard, play the faction questlines, and decide after the first Unity run whether you want more of this universe. That is a much better filter than trusting a bundle to make the decision for you. And if you bounced off the base game because the exploration felt like paperwork, the expansion does not change the fundamental loop enough to bring you back, no matter how good that one handcrafted city looks.
