About Nights of Azure
I went into Nights of Azure expecting a competent Gust side-project, and what I got was something stranger and more emotionally honest than that studio's usual output. Developer Gust, best known for lighthearted Atelier titles, swings hard toward gothic darkness here, and the tonal shift mostly works. The central relationship between Arnice, a half-demon holy knight of the Curia, and Lilysse, the saint fated to become a sacrifice to the resurrected Nightlord, carries real weight. The story earns its central moral dilemma, and when the twist lands in the back half, it lands properly. The world of Ruswal Island is atmospheric in the way good RPG settings tend to be: lived-in enough to feel real, mysterious enough to keep you pushing forward. Composer Kazuki Yanagawa delivers a score with Castlevania-adjacent DNA, and it elevates every dungeon crawl and boss encounter considerably. On the character design front, Gust's signature ability to translate artwork into expressive on-screen models is intact. The Servan system is the mechanical hook worth understanding before you buy. Arnice can bring up to four contracted demons into battle, each slotting into one of six roles: Attacker, Defender, Support, Magic, Tricky, and Follower. They level up, change appearance as they grow, and each carries a Servan Burst ability that costs SP and swings from raw damage to healing to stat buffs. Arnice herself can also temporarily transform mid-combat, with the form she takes determined by the color attributes of her active Servans, shifting between flame, speed, and recovery-focused modes. On paper, that is a genuinely interesting combat web. In practice, the main story rarely demands you pull on those threads. Enemies through most of the campaign offer negligible resistance, and since Arnice's base moveset is limited to light, heavy, and special attacks chained into short combos, the combat loop goes stale faster than it should. The dungeon layouts feel short and samey, subquests at the Ende Hotel hub boil down to repetitive fetch-and-kill requests, and Daytime Activities, which are meant to let Arnice develop between hunts, play out as text blurbs with no real interactivity. There is a harder postgame that demands more from your Servan loadout, but getting there requires tolerating the padded middle sections first. Early hours are also artificially restricted; most system features are gated behind an upgrade tree, meaning the build you actually want to run is locked away until you invest enough leveling time to unlock basic slots and quest capacity. The PC port itself is the definition of minimum viable effort. Button prompts default to PS4 layouts with no adjustment, the resolution cap sat at 1080p at launch, and the cutscenes have historically been unstable at framerate even when gameplay runs at a consistent 60 FPS. A controller is not optional here, it is mandatory if you want a functional experience. The game is entirely Japanese-voiced with English subtitles, which is a non-issue if you are used to that format but worth flagging. On the positive side, the Steam version ships with all DLC included, which means the full Servan roster is accessible from the start. Nights of Azure is squarely for players who prioritize atmosphere, character relationships, and narrative payoff over mechanical depth. If you are looking for a tightly designed action system that holds up through a replay, look elsewhere. If you want a 12-to-15-hour gothic RPG where the central romance makes you feel something by the credits, and you can tolerate some RPG busywork around it, Nights of Azure quietly delivers.
