MudRunner - American Wilds Edition

I've spent enough time with logistics and resource-management sims to know when a game is actually simulating something versus just using the word for marketing purposes. MudRunner sits in a fascinating middle ground: the physics engine is genuinely demanding, tire tread and suspension interact with surface conditions in ways that matter, but it never tips into the memorise-a-switchboard realism of something like Train Sim World. The result is a game that asks you to think carefully about route planning, fuel load, and when to deploy your winch, without demanding an engineering degree to get started. The American Wilds Edition is the complete package. You get 10 sandbox maps and 11 challenge maps spanning bleak Siberian backroads and, new with this edition, American terrain inspired by Montana and North Dakota. The vehicle roster runs to over 30 machines with 60 configurable add-ons, and the American content brings licensed trucks from Western Star, Hummer, and Chevrolet alongside the older Soviet workhorses. The core objective loop, haul logs from point A to point B without destroying your truck or running dry on fuel, sounds thin on paper. In practice, every run is a routing puzzle where the shortest path is rarely the safest. Maps like Island and Downhill layer in elevation changes, river crossings, and soft ground that swallows vehicles whole if you commit to the wrong line. That is where the depth lives. Co-op is where this game earns a strong recommendation for a second player. Up to four players can share a sandbox map, which means one person scouting with a lighter vehicle while another hauls the actual payload, or one player winching a stuck friend out of a ditch while a third refuels at a distant garage. The coordination is low-tech but satisfying in a way that more bombastic co-op games rarely match. Solo play is equally valid but lonelier in the bad moments. Steam Workshop support on PC adds a long tail of community maps and vehicles, which meaningfully extends the content well past the base offering. The criticism that has followed this series since its Spintires days still applies here. The new vehicle and map content introduced in American Wilds is partially locked behind a progression point currency, and the game does a poor job explaining how to earn those points. First-time players will bounce off the interface before they find their footing. The handling also has a learning curve where overcorrecting on steering feels punishing until you internalise how these heavy vehicles actually move. If you go in expecting a traditional racing game or something with a guided tutorial that holds your hand past the first ten minutes, you will be frustrated. If you go in expecting a slow, methodical problem-solving experience where getting unstuck after a bad river crossing feels genuinely earned, this delivers that consistently. For strategy and sim players who appreciate resource constraints and route optimisation, this is exactly the kind of game that rewards patience. The Steam review score at 92% positive from a large sample is not an accident. Start with the Siberian sandbox maps to learn the physics, keep your winch equipped at all times, and resist the urge to floor it through anything that looks wet.
