Monster Train
A vertical deck-builder roguelike where stacking decisions matter more than card draw. One of the sharpest strategic roguelikes if you're willing to think in columns instead of lanes.
GamerScout Verdict
Best for strategy players comfortable with asymmetric board design and willing to optimize through trial and error.

About Monster Train
I spent thirty hours convincing myself Monster Train's vertical board wasn't just gimmickry. It isn't. The core loop is pure deck-building strategy: you pick a clan pair (each with unique mechanics), assemble a deck, and defend three horizontal train cars stacked vertically. Positioning, train arrangement, and spell timing compound into build-order puzzles that reward spreadsheet thinking. The AI is competent enough that you can't brute-force early floors, and the late game scales meaningfully. Runs rarely feel identical. The multiplayer PvP mode exists but feels tacked-on compared to the single-player campaign, and the UI occasionally obscures board state during chaotic turns. Mod support is negligible for a game this young. If you've finished Slay the Spire and want something architecturally different, this is the rightchoice. The learning curve is honest but steep; expect 5-10 runs before your deck decisions stop being random guesses.
