GamerScout Verdict
Best for arcade enthusiasts and couch co-op crews who respect old-school challenge and don't need hand-holding.

About Metal Slug
I fired up Metal Slug expecting the arcade original to feel ancient, and it does - in the best way. You're a soldier sprinting left-to-right, blasting everything that moves, grabbing weapons and vehicles that trivialize entire sections. The pixel art still pops, the weapon variety (from flamethrower to laser) actually changes how you tackle levels, and the co-op chaos is immediate fun. It's pure 90s arcade DNA: simple rules, escalating difficulty, no story padding. The catch: this is the arcade version, which means it's hard as nails and expects you to loop through it. Continues are limited. No difficulty slider. If you're hunting for a chill 2D shooter or a modern campaign with progression systems, keep walking. But if you want to see where run-and-gun games came from and you have a friend on the couch, Metal Slug is still sharp and worth the time.
