Metal: Hellsinger - Purgatory

I came into the Purgatory DLC already sold on the core loop, so the question here is narrow: does this pack give you a reason to boot the game back up, or is it a cosmetics grab with a light music wrapper? The short answer is it earns its keep, mostly on the strength of Telos, the new bow weapon. Where the base game's pistols and shotgun operate on strict downbeat rhythms, Telos rewards precision in a different way, you charge shots, go for headshots to multiply damage, and retrieve spent arrows to keep firing without interruption. It slots naturally into the existing ruleset while genuinely changing how you approach tempo. Players who found some of the base weapons a little one-dimensional will appreciate that weapon selection here actually shifts the rhythm feel rather than just the visual style. The three new tracks are the other obvious selling point. Matt Heafy of Trivium returns for a second appearance, joined by Melissa Bonny of Ad Infinitum and Joe Bad of Fit for an Autopsy. All three songs follow the same structural trick the base game perfected: they start sparse, layering in guitars and vocals as your Fury multiplier climbs, so a clean run genuinely sounds different from a sloppy one. The vocal talent is strong, the production sits right in the game's established register, and none of the three tracks feel like filler picked to pad the tracklist. The cosmetic skins bundled in (Obsidian, Amethyst, and Chromatica) are fine, purely visual, and will appeal to players who care about The Unknown's look on leaderboard screens. They add nothing mechanical, which is fine for what they are. The more meaningful addition arriving alongside Purgatory is the free Leviathan Horde Mode, a roguelite-structured mode with its own progression system that sits outside the campaign entirely. It addresses one of the main criticisms leveled at the base game, namely that the five-to-six hour campaign left score-chasers hungry for more structured long-term content. Leviathan is free for all owners, but it's worth noting because Purgatory and the mode launched together and the pair dramatically changes how much time the full package can hold. The caveats from the base game carry over. Enemy variety is still limited, boss encounters are the weakest part of the design, and anyone who bounced off the rhythm mechanic before will not find anything here to change their mind. This DLC is purely for people already inside the tent. If you are, three high-quality tracks and a mechanically distinct weapon justify the expansion at a reasonable price point, especially if you want new material to run through the Leviathan mode.
