Warm, unsettling, and over in one sitting: Little Misfortune is the kind of hand-crafted narrative that critics underscored but 14,000 Steam players quietly fell in love with.

I went in expecting something close to Fran Bow, and what I found instead was softer, stranger, and more fragile. Little Misfortune is a 2.5D narrative adventure from the two-person studio Killmonday Games, set in 1993 Sweden, following eight-year-old Misfortune Ramirez Hernandez as she wanders into the woods on the promise of winning Eternal Happiness for her mom. The voice guiding her, Mr. Voice, is also the game's narrator and, quietly, its antagonist. That tension between guide and threat is the emotional spine of the whole experience. Mechanically, this is about as light as it gets. You move left or right along a 2.5D path, examine objects, throw glitter at things (there is a dedicated glitter button, and yes, it is wonderful), and make branching choices that accumulate toward one of two endings. Scattered through the journey are small minigames - fixing a broken vase, digging in a pet cemetery with a tiny shovel, a genuinely surreal dance-off at a hamster nightclub - that break up the pacing without ever demanding real skill. Compared to Fran Bow, the puzzle count is almost zero. If mechanical challenge is what you're after, look elsewhere. This is closer to an illustrated audio drama that you occasionally push forward with a mouse click. What the game trades in mechanics, it earns back in craft. Natalia Martinsson's hand-drawn art sits in that uncomfortable space between a children's storybook and something you would not show a child. The character designs are papery and expressive, the environments shift from sunlit Swedish suburbs into genuinely unsettling territory without relying on jump scares or gore for effect. The horror here is emotional rather than visceral - built on the slow realization of what Misfortune's home life actually looks like beneath her cheerful narration. Isak Martinsson's original soundtrack carries a lot of that weight, cycling between whimsical and quietly devastating in a way that very few small-studio scores manage. The voice acting for Misfortune herself is the performance the whole game depends on, and it holds. The criticisms are real and worth flagging. The choices, while meaningful enough to produce two distinct endings, feel shallow in the middle - most branching paths converge quickly and the differences across two playthroughs are minor. Dialogue pacing can drag on a second run, and there is no option to skip or fast-forward lines. The runtime is roughly three to four hours, which some players will find honest and others will find thin given the price. Critics were split (Metacritic sits at 57, OpenCritic at 78) largely because the game resists being evaluated as a traditional adventure. Steam players, though - 92% positive across over 14,000 reviews - clearly found what they were looking for. This is a game that knows exactly what it is and ends before it overstays its welcome. It is for players who will sit with the dissonance of a cheerful eight-year-old skipping through genuinely dark themes, who appreciate when a tiny studio puts every resource into mood rather than breadth. If you bounced off Fran Bow because the puzzles frustrated you, this is the gentler door into Killmonday's world. If you need interactivity to feel engaged, the walking-sim-adjacent structure will test your patience. But for the right kind of player - the one who would call a three-hour experience complete if it lands its ending - Little Misfortune lands its ending. Kai, Scout Team

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
