Hunt: Showdown 1896 - The Arcane Archaeologist
If cosmetic DLC is going to earn its price, the lore and visual design need to pull weight. The Arcane Archaeologist does just enough of both to matter to Hunt regulars.
GamerScout Verdict
Worth it for dedicated Hunt regulars who want a hunter with genuine lore depth - skip if you haven't committed to the base game yet.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

About Hunt: Showdown 1896 - The Arcane Archaeologist
I've spent enough time in Hunt's corrupted bayous and Colorado ridgelines to know that every hunter you field carries a personality, and Elise Austin - the Archaeologist at the heart of this DLC - is one of the more interesting ones the game has produced. Her backstory threads Hopi archaeological mythology into Hunt's southern gothic weirdness in a way that actually fits the tone. She isn't just another roughneck; she's a disgraced academic who followed a dream into the swamp, and that specificity makes the skin feel lived-in rather than slapped on. What you get here is two items: the Archaeologist hunter skin and the Mesa Updraught, a reskinned Vetterli 71 Deadeye. The Vetterli Deadeye is a solid long-range pick in the base game - a single-shot rifle that rewards patience and positioning, exactly the playstyle you'd expect from someone who used to scan desert mesas for hostiles. The weapon skin itself is rugged and thematically tight, carrying dust and distance in its design language. Neither item changes how you play, which is the honest reality of every cosmetic DLC in Hunt: no stat buffs, no new mechanics, just visual expression. That framing matters when you're evaluating whether this is worth picking up. Hunt: Showdown 1896 sits at an 81 on Metacritic and has built one of the more devoted communities in the extraction shooter space, precisely because its core loop - tracking bounty monsters, banishing them, then fighting your way to extract through rival hunter teams - demands real attention. The permadeath stakes mean every loadout decision carries weight, and the binaural audio system that snaps every twig and startled crow into a directional ping in your headset keeps tension near-constant. The Arcane Archaeologist is a skin drop inside that framework, not a gameplay expansion. Where the base game has drawn criticism - a widely disliked UI overhaul following the 2024 engine upgrade to CryEngine 5.11, some PC performance roughness, and a notoriously steep new-player curve - none of that changes with this DLC. If you're not already hooked on Hunt, this pack will not be the thing that converts you. If you are hooked, and you want a hunter whose lore actually connects to a wider narrative thread (Elise has lore ties that extend into seasonal events), this is one of the better-crafted character releases in the catalog. Bottom line for committed Hunt players: the Archaeologist is a well-built cosmetic with genuine thematic coherence and a rifle skin that earns its place in a long-range loadout. For everyone else, sort out the base game first.
