Dead Island Definitive Edition
A 2024 remake of the cult zombie-slasher that trades the Caribbean for LA, keeping the gory melee combat and four-player co-op that made the original cult-weird.
GamerScout Verdict
Best for co-op groups who want melee zombie action without the survival complexity, but bring friends or don't bother.

About Dead Island Definitive Edition
Dead Island Definitive Edition feels like a game that got exhumed, dusted off, and given a fresh coat of paint rather than a full rebuild. You're one of four immune survivors hacking through LA's undead hordes with improvised weapons, leveling up your character and unlocking new combat skills. The meat of it is straightforward: dismemberment physics, co-op bloodletting, light RPG progression. It's not trying to out-think Left 4 Dead or reinvent the wheel. What works: the melee combat feels satisfying when you're swinging maimed limbs at shambling targets, and the four-player co-op mode is where it finds its rhythm if you've got friends willing to commit. What doesn't: the campaign feels thin and repetitive solo, enemy variety is sparse, and the presentation hasn't aged into anything special. It's a low-key remaster of a 2011 game, not a revelation. Play it if you want co-op zombie slashing without the tactical intensity of modern survival games. Skip it if you're hunting single-player story substance.
