Ninety-six percent positive across 128,000 Steam reviews is a number that demands attention, and after sinking time into both the roguelite dungeons and the cult management loop, I can confirm the crowd is not wrong.

I came into Cult of the Lamb expecting a novelty pitch dressed up in cute art, and left with a legitimate opinion that Massive Monster built something structurally smarter than most genre mash-ups manage. The core split is clean: you run randomized dungeon crusades across four biomes, fighting through rooms with melee weapons and cult-themed spells, then return to your compound to manage a growing colony of woodland followers who need food, shelter, sermons, and the occasional human sacrifice. Neither half feels bolted onto the other. Resources gathered on crusades feed your settlement; your settlement's faith meter determines how much power you carry into the next run. That feedback loop is the best thing in the game, and it keeps the clock moving. On the combat side, the roguelite mechanics are deliberately accessible. Dungeon paths are readable before you commit to them, runs clock in at roughly 15 to 25 minutes, and dying simply returns you to base without wiping your colony progress. You lose some run-specific loot, not your whole church. The spell variety covers ground tentacles, fireballs, and curse-based builds, though the honest criticism here is that the upgrade choices per run are narrow. You rarely face more than two options at a crossroads, which means the depth of decision-making that defines the best roguelikes is noticeably trimmed. If Binding of Isaac-style build alchemy is what you are chasing, manage expectations accordingly. The settlement management is where strategy players will find the most texture. You start with a clearing and a handful of followers and end up running a compound with 15 to 20 residents, each aging, getting sick, losing faith, and dying of old age if you ignore them long enough. Doctrine trees let you choose between benevolent and exploitative governance styles: you can run communal farming operations or convert elderly followers into resources through rituals. The game tracks follower loyalty individually, which means neglect has real mechanical consequences, not just mood-meter penalties. Mini-games like fishing and backgammon pad out the settlement phase and break up the rhythm without overstaying their welcome. The Woolhaven expansion added post-game content and new mechanics, so players arriving now have more to do after the final boss than the 2022 launch crowd did. The Cultist Edition bundles the base game with the Cultist cosmetic DLC pack, which adds peaceful-themed decorations and additional follower forms. The cosmetics are purely aesthetic, no gameplay edge included, so the decision comes down to whether the visual customization appeals to you. The 2-player local co-op and Remote Play Together support mean there is a couch co-op angle here that most roguelites skip entirely, and the full controller support is genuinely comfortable. At launch the game had a frustrating number of bugs that could kill runs mid-boss, but patches over the years have addressed the worst of them. The late-game loop does drift toward repetition once all four biomes are cleared and doctrine trees are filled, which is the one honest reason a completionist might feel the ending come sooner than the opening hours promise. GamerScout Verdict

Best for players who want a management sim with roguelite teeth and do not mind a shallow-ish combat upgrade tree.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
