GamerScout Verdict
A robust historical RTS for veterans willing to tolerate early-2000s UI in exchange for tactical depth and faction asymmetry.

About Cossacks Anthology
I've got a soft spot for old GSC strategy games, and Cossacks Anthology is the kind of RTS that rewards micromanagement over base-building busywork. You're commanding period armies in large-scale skirmishes across Russian, Ottoman, British, French, and other factions, each with distinct unit rosters and economic quirks. Eleven campaigns pull from actual history, and the unit count per battle is genuinely impressive for 2003. The UI is clunky by modern standards, and there's zero hand-holding, so expect a learning curve if you're not used to older RTS games. What works is the asymmetry. Every faction feels different to play, and late-game battles become intricate logistics puzzles rather than APM spam. What doesn't work as smoothly is pathfinding and the pace outside of combat, which can drag. This is a niche title for RTS veterans who value historical setting and strategic depth over polish. If you're hunting for something that feels like a museum piece of pre-StarCraft strategy design, this scratches that itch.
