Blackguards Franchise Bundle

My first party wipe came in a tavern brawl I had assumed was scripted to be survivable. It wasn't. Two thugs flanked my mage, a crit landed, and the whole run soured because I hadn't read the Dark Eye rules under the hood. That's the Blackguards pitch in a sentence: pen-and-paper stat math on hex battlefields, wrapped around a story about criminals and outcasts rather than the usual chosen-one nonsense. The bundle covers both entries. The first is a slow, chewy tactics RPG with heavy dialogue and a genuinely bleak cast. The sequel tightens combat, adds a conquest layer, and hands you Cassia, easily the more interesting protagonist of the two. Where it disappoints: the difficulty curve is a cliff, encounters repeat more than they should, and the presentation creaks in a way that a Daedalic budget can't hide. Character builds are deep but punishing, because the Dark Eye system lets you invest points badly and only tells you forty hours later. If you want a tactics RPG that respects rules-lawyer instincts and forgives nothing, this holds up. If you want a smooth modern CRPG, look elsewhere.
