GamerScout Verdict
Tight horror-RPG that respects playtime: skip if you want 40+ hours, grab it if you want narrative meat in a short window.

About Black River
Black River caught me off guard because it refuses the standard horror-game escape fantasy. Instead of fleeing the village, you're building toward confrontation, which changes how you approach resource scarcity and NPC interactions. The survival mechanics feel grounded enough to matter during those few hours, and the shift from victim to aggressor gives the narrative weight that most indie horror games miss. Turn-based or real-time choices, trading, crafting, the bones are there. The downside: at 3-5 hours, there's not much room for deep systems to breathe. If you're hunting for something with the mechanical complexity of a full RPG, this is more a tight narrative experience with RPG flavoring. It works best if you treat it as a focused horror story with teeth, not a sandbox. Solid choice if you want something that respects your time and doesn't outstay its welcome.
