Turtle Rock Studios - the original team behind Left 4 Dead - came back with a co-op zombie shooter that keeps the bones of that classic formula intact while layering in a card-based progression system that genuinely changes how runs feel from session to session. You build a deck of Supply Cards before each run, stacking buffs like increased stamina, damage bonuses, and team-wide perks. It sounds fiddly, but once it clicks, tweaking your deck between attempts becomes one of the more compelling loops in the genre. The campaign sends a squad of four Cleaners through 33 levels across multiple Acts, fighting through hordes of Ridden - the game's infected - plus a roster of nastier special variants: Tallboys that soak punishment and swing hard, wall-crawling Sleepers that ambush from cover, acid-spitting Ridden that punish tight formation play. The AI Director system, returning from the Left 4 Dead days, dynamically shifts enemy placement and item availability based on how well your team is performing, which keeps veteran groups from settling into a comfortable groove. Objectives vary enough - escort runs, defense holds, item retrieval - that the 33-level campaign doesn't feel like a straight march from saferoom to saferoom every time. Where the game earns its mixed reception is in the corners. Solo play is a real weak spot: the bot AI is functional but rarely impressive, and at launch Turtle Rock stripped out stat tracking and achievement unlocks for offline play - a decision that frustrated a lot of players who like to practice alone. The PvP Swarm mode, which pits a Cleaner squad against a team playing as Ridden in round-based skirmishes, is the kind of asymmetric mode that sounds exciting but in practice lands closer to an afterthought. Community feedback has consistently pointed at uneven difficulty scaling and some mechanics - particularly the Trauma health system that caps your maximum HP - that felt punishing in ways that weren't fun, even after patches. Turtle Rock did address several of those issues over time, but active development has since wound down, so what you see now is largely the final form of the game. The Ultimate Edition bundles the base game with the Annual Pass, which adds three DLC drops covering new story content, additional playable Cleaner characters, and new mutated Ridden types. If you're going in fresh with friends, that's a reasonable package - more missions and characters extend the life of something that otherwise runs thin once your group has cleared the campaign a few times. It's worth being realistic: this is not a game you grind solo for hundreds of hours. It's a game you fire up with three friends on a Friday night, build a ridiculous healing-focused deck, and laugh when a Sleeper drops from a ceiling at exactly the wrong moment.
