The best liar at your friend group's game night wins. If you don't have a friend group to play with, Among Us will remind you of that fact repeatedly.

I've sat through enough party game nights to know the difference between a game that sparks genuine conversation and one that just fills dead air. Among Us does something rare: it turns a ten-minute round of spaceship busywork into a full courtroom drama, and it does it with almost no rules overhead. You and up to fourteen other players split into Crewmates and Impostors, with Crewmates completing a set of simple minigames across maps like The Skeld, MIRA HQ, Polus, The Airship, and The Fungle, while one or more Impostors try to kill everyone, sabotage critical systems such as reactor and oxygen, and slide through vents without getting caught. When a body drops, an Emergency Meeting kicks off and everyone talks. That discussion phase is where the game actually lives. Innersloth has been steadily expanding the role roster since the base Crewmate and Impostor setup, and the current state of the game has nine special roles alongside the defaults. Crewmate-side roles include the Scientist, Engineer, Noisemaker, Tracker, Detective, and Guardian Angel, while Impostors can roll as a Shapeshifter, Phantom, or the newer Viper, whose acid ability dissolves corpses through three decay stages before they vanish entirely. The Detective, added in late 2025, is the most mechanically involved Crewmate role yet, letting you interrogate other players about their whereabouts and track suspects across multiple cases. For private lobbies with friends who actually want to think, these roles add a real layer of strategy. For public lobbies with randoms, enabling all nine roles at once can make Emergency Meetings feel like everyone is arguing in three different languages simultaneously. The host settings give you full control over kill cooldowns, Impostor vision, and which roles appear, so a well-configured private lobby runs very differently from a chaotic public one. The honest caveat here is one the community repeats constantly: the experience scales almost entirely with your group. Playing with eight friends on voice chat while someone desperately tries to alibi a vent kill they definitely committed is some of the most fun multiplayer gaming offers. Drop into a public lobby solo and you get emergency meetings called with zero evidence, text-only chat that limits bluffing range, and the occasional griefer who just votes randomly. The limited vision mechanic and spatial layout of each map do a lot of heavy lifting to create tension regardless of group quality, but the social deduction core needs willing participants to reach full potential. For a game pushing seven years old, the update cadence is respectable. Three new roles shipped in 2024, two more in 2025, and Innersloth has publicly committed to more Crewmate, Impostor, and even Ghost roles in 2026. The maps are still limited in number, and some long-term players feel the role additions have bloated what was once a beautifully minimal formula. That criticism has merit, especially if you fell in love with the pure two-role format. But roles are optional per lobby, so you can run classic mode whenever the new stuff feels like too much noise. Among Us is the kind of game that only needs fifteen minutes of your time but somehow takes three hours. Its staying power comes from the fact that no two Emergency Meetings play out the same way. If you have a reliable crew and a voice channel, it still holds up as one of the sharpest social games on PC. Solo players willing to tolerate public lobby chaos will find something workable, just not the same thing. Alex, Scout Team
