The Dynasties of India DLC adds three full civilizations and campaign missions to one of the most refined RTS games ever made. More depth for a game that already has too much.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is the gold standard for real-time strategy on PC, and Dynasties of India is one of its more substantive expansions. The DLC introduces three new civilizations - the Bengalis, Gurjaras, and Dravidians - each with distinct unit rosters, economic quirks, and tech tree gaps that demand different build orders depending on matchup. This is not cosmetic variety. Bengalis get an elephant-heavy identity with strong water play. Gurjaras bring camel-based harassment and a food-efficient start that experienced players will exploit early. Dravidians lean into unique infantry and a strong navy. If you have been playing AoE2 DE for years and feel like every standard civilization opener is muscle memory, these three shake the decision tree in meaningful ways. For newcomers trying to understand why this 20-plus-year-old game still holds a 95-percent positive rating on Steam, the answer is layered decision density. Every match is a negotiation between economy pacing, military timing, and technology investment. Dynasties of India does not change that core loop, it adds three more dialects to a language you already know. The new campaign missions are built around historical figures from South Asian history and they follow the same reliable AoE2 mission structure: scripted objectives, escalating difficulty, and enough cutscene context to make the history feel grounded rather than decorative. Campaign veterans will clear these missions in a few sessions. Competitive players will spend considerably longer internalizing the new unit interactions. On the balance side, all three civilizations have gone through multiple patches since launch and they sit in a reasonable place for ranked multiplayer. Gurjaras in particular went through some turbulent tuning in early patches and if you check the balance history you will see why the community was vocal. World's Edge has a reasonable track record of listening to that feedback. The modding ecosystem around AoE2 DE is also substantial, and Dynasties of India civilizations are fully supported by the scenario editor and custom campaign tools, which extends their value well beyond the included missions. The main caveat: this is DLC, not a standalone product. You need Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition to use it, and if you are only a casual player who sticks to one or two civilizations, the additions here will not change your experience much. The value scales sharply with how deep you are already in the game. For players who have exhausted the base roster or want more campaign hours with historical South Asian settings, this is a focused and well-executed addition. For someone still learning feudal age timing, finish the base game first. Diego, Scout Team
