XCOM 2: Digital Deluxe
Eighty-five percent positive across over 100,000 Steam reviews and an 88 on Metacritic, XCOM 2 has earned that reputation the hard way, by making you care deeply about soldiers who can die permanently on a missed 90% shot.
GamerScout Verdict
Best for tactics players who want a punishing, deeply moddable campaign and don't mind that the base-game late game goes soft.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

About XCOM 2: Digital Deluxe
I have restarted XCOM 2 campaigns more times than I care to admit, and each time the loss that triggered the restart was entirely, infuriatingly my fault. That is the core loop Firaxis built here: a turn-based tactical game layered over a resource-management strategy layer, where every decision compounds. You are running a guerrilla resistance from a converted alien ship called the Avenger, managing Intel, Supplies, Elerium, and Engineer time simultaneously while the enemy's Avatar Project ticks toward a game-over state on the Geoscape. The pressure is constant and mostly self-inflicted. On the tactical layer, your squad of up to six soldiers draws from five base classes: Ranger, Grenadier, Sharpshooter, Specialist, and Psi Operative, each with branching perk trees that meaningfully change how you play them. Rangers can spec into melee Blademaster builds or stay ranged with Shadowstrike. Grenadiers split between Demolition and heavy-weapon focus. The Specialist's Gremlin drone is one of the more clever additions to the genre, doubling as both a hacking tool against ADVENT mechanical units and a combat medic. Permadeath is on by default and it is the correct way to play: losing a Colonel-ranked Sharpshooter three missions from the endgame is genuinely gutting, and that emotional stakes are what separate XCOM 2 from every imitator. The Digital Deluxe edition bundles in the Resistance Warrior Pack cosmetics, the Anarchy's Children cosmetic DLC, the Alien Hunters DLC (which adds boss-tier Ruler enemies that act on every player action, not just their turn), and Shen's Last Gift, which introduces the SPARK mech soldier class and a standalone story mission worth playing. For newcomers worried about the complexity: the tutorial is short but functional, and the Rookie difficulty gives you enough breathing room to understand the Geoscape before it punishes you. My honest advice is to play on Commander difficulty from the start once you have two or three missions under your belt. The mid-game, when you are juggling Proving Grounds research for experimental grenades and armor while trying to suppress the Avatar Project by raiding Alien Facilities, is where XCOM 2 peaks. The late game is the one area where the base game shows cracks: once your squad is running Powered Armor and Plasma weapons, mission difficulty drops sharply and the Avatar Project timer becomes easy to manage. The community has flagged this for years, and it is a real structural issue. What saves the late game, and extends the entire package by hundreds of hours, is the mod ecosystem. Steam Workshop support is deep and Firaxis actively encouraged it. The Long War 2 overhaul by Pavonis Interactive, officially sanctioned by Firaxis, essentially rebuilds the campaign into a longer, harder, more intricate experience with expanded infiltration mechanics and new soldier classes. Beyond that, mods like A Better Advent overhaul enemy AI and spawn variety, and class packs let you build custom soldier rosters well outside the vanilla five. If you are the type who keeps a spreadsheet of research queue priorities (I do), the Workshop will keep you occupied indefinitely. One performance note: load times on mechanical HDDs were a known complaint at launch; on an SSD the experience is significantly smoother.
